Came home from the doctor a week ago and he told me that I have an enlarged Liver. My enzymes are all within the normal range.
A little back ground.... A male age 61, triple by-pass 2 1/2 years ago, started drinking at age 17 (went into the Navy) and haven't missed a day except when in the hospital. Progressed to the point of maybe 10-15 drinks per day......mostly beer until about a year or so ago then onto Vodka.
Do to this I have made a decision to completely stop drinking. I do have a really strong support system. I quess what my question really is can this be a help to me? The Doctor didn't tell me any more that that I have an enlarged Liver. Didn't recommed and follow up. The only other thing that he did state was to quit drinking.

I'm a 65 year old woman, and drank from the time I was 15 off and on, (mostly on) till 1994. I didn't really have any Liver problems,( that I knew of ) at the time just wanted to quit. And by the Grace of God I did, and quit smoking too.
Well about nine months after I quit I had a bad asthma attack and they drew blood at the Hospital. Liver enzines were high, and kept being high everytime they tested it. More tests and an Ultra sound. Anyway after all this, found out I had Hep C, and Cirrhosis. Plus my Liver, and Spleen were enlarged.
Thank God I stopped when I did. With all this all I take is Milk Thistle, and Proprananol for the Portal Hypertension, I am blessed. So YES it must have helped me from not getting any worse.
And also I research any medicine doctors try and give me and if it's bad for the Liver I don't take it, It's my Liver, and I would be the one who pay's if it harms me.
Good Luck and hang in there.#1; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:10:00 GMT
- Hi granny ! I have a question for you !...I just got diagnosed 2 weeks ago with hep c. You stated that you research drugs you take and wont take it they hurt your liver...do you know anything about pain meds > I see a pain doc and take methadone and hydrocodone. .What about morphine sulfate ? IS that ok ?
Thank you for your time !..oh and I started on the milk thistle too. From what it says on the bottle is kinda confusing of how much Im taking. It says ( front) Milk Thistle 1000 mg...then on back it saysMilk Thistle 250mg silybum marianum seed 1000 mg of milk thistle.........so Im not real sure of how much just know 2 caps a day !

- Well stopping drinking is a must!
Depending on how far along the problem is, it is amazing how the liver can regenerate its cells! And you dont have to have 100% of your liver all unscarred and working to still function, Ive hear as much as 60% can be damaged and you still can function. (Don't quote on that % - I actually heard it was even higher but dont have the doc report at hand to send you the url)...
Next drink you look at...Ask yourself if the drink is going to be good enough to die for.
If youve been drinking for a long time, as your Doctor to help you on a step by step method - you don't want to take a chance on getting the Delirium Tremens as that can end you up right in the Emergency Room in possibly life threatening conditions.
Do not the possibility of getting DTs (Delirium Tremens) to stop your drinking.
Stop - NOW. Ask your Doc the best way for you.
Besides stopping the intake of any form of alcohol today...
You really need to get eating right.
Talk to a dietician, or, at least look on the internet.
There are many many helpful sights on how to love your liver, etc, eating right to help rejuvenate liver tissue/cells, and, how to avoid hurting the liver through food.
And exercise as much as you can!
Good Luck! Don't give up!#3; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:12:00 GMT
